My name is Kelly Michelle Kelley (“Michelle Kelley”). I was born and raised in Los Angeles County and am passionate about working as a public servant to better our community. Since 2008, I have worked as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County. I have spent the majority of my career protecting society’s most vulnerable victims, in a unit that specializes in the prosecution of child molestation, forcible sex crimes, human trafficking, elder abuse, and physical violence against women and children.
While I have prosecuted dozens of jury trials including murders, child molestation, and forcible rape, I also take great pride in the hundreds of cases that I have been able to resolve without the need for a jury trial. These include serious and violent felonies, including several defendants who have pled guilty for life sentences prior to trial. I have been successful in securing these pretrial pleas by working hard to collect and evaluate all of the evidence in an objective manner, and taking the time to meet with and collaborate with all interested parties with the goal of maximizing justice for all. Securing a pretrial guilty plea not only spares the victim from reliving the trauma by having to testify in a public courtroom at trial, but is also judicially economical for the taxpayers of LA county.
Importantly, I have only pushed for pleas where a defendant is willing to accept responsibility. I understand that our system of justice has been built on the right of all citizens to remain innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I am keenly aware of incidents of wrongful convictions, so I am always mindful of seeking convictions as dictated by the evidence, which leads to a high degree of confidence in the resulting verdicts and resolutions.
I have also used my training and experience at the DA’s Office to teach investigation techniques to law enforcement officers to secure the most thorough and accurate information possible. In addition, I have taught sexual assault nurses trial preparation techniques to help them be the best presenters of crucial information in highly charged cases.
Over time, I have garnered an exceptional reputation amongst my peers, opposing counsel, law enforcement, Superior Court Judges, and victims of crime. I am known for my integrity, honesty, fairness, and relentless pursuit of justice. I firmly believe in the importance, especially for those in a position of power, of treating everyone with dignity, respect, and fairness.
In embarking on this journey to be a superior court judge for the county that I have served for many years, I will be true to these values. The qualities that I have exhibited as an attorney speak volumes about my character and the judicial temperament I will display. I will ensure that the accused has his/her day in court, in a fair and equitable manner, so that every case can be decided on its merits. I will carefully weigh and consider the positions of all interested parties before coming to a decision. And I will reach decisions in an even-tempered manner consistent with the law.
When I am not practicing law, I enjoy spending time with my husband of 13 years and our two beautiful children. I also enjoy traveling, running, and teaching criminal law to youth in the community.
